Welcome to a new edition of our normal reviews. Today we're taking a blacked out approach to how we look at watches and discovering how different luminous materials look when the lights are turned off. Without further delay, lets start by taking a look at the Rolex Maxi Dial Supercase, 116619LB and an A series 16610. Once the lights are off, you can see the difference between the lume on each watch. On the more recent 6 digit reference, you can see the blue Chromalight luminescent material. blue is said to be the last color to fade from vision. The lume is much more legible as there is more surface area on the dial. From Rolex, we're jumping to Omega. A match up of the classic James Bond 2531.80 and the Broad Sword 2231.80. Two similar but different references with titanium versus stainless case, broad sword and maxi versus printed plots and skeletonized hands. Once they get charged up and the lights switched off, you can see that the Bond can barely put up a fight against the super luminova on the Broad Sword. In a class on it's own, they don't come any bigger than the Seamaster Professional 1200, the 2009 re-edition. This timepiece comes equipped with a fully lumed sapphire capped bezel. When the lights are off, you can see that this watch is truly in a league of it's own. The watch is almost a UFO at ground level. It's functional, an attraction and a novelty all at the same time. What would a lume shot be without a Panerai. The PAM 368 in titanium, PAM 48 and the PAM 25 D series. Be sure to check out the different reactions to darkness from the different style dials and the different materials used on them. The PAM 48 holds it own against the larger PAM 368. For those considering an older model, it is important to noted the brightness of this PAM 25. IWC has produced the Aquatimer 2000, which features sapphire over a luminescent bezel again. When the lights go out on this model, it is fully luminescent and thoughtfully laid out. The first critical 15 minutes on the bezel as well as the minutes hand are executed in a different color for easy reading when the lights are out. Not a dive watch, but rather a true sports watch with 150m water resistance, the Vacheron Constantin 47040 features a large amount of lume for low or no light environments. Stay tuned for more features like this!
