Sisters Called to Serve

Sisters: Called to Serve This short film was created by IRD Duhallow's SAOI Network, as part of the LEADER funded Memory Through Memory training project. This film reveals the stories of young women who joined the convent in Newmarket (now the James O' Keeffe Institute, home of IRD Duhallow). They emigrated as teenagers to Australia and became the Sisters of Saint Joseph. What was life like in the convent at Newmarket and where are these women today? The word "SAOI" is the old Irish word for wise person -- generally an older member of the community to whom people would turn to for advice. IRD Duhallow's SAOI Network represents actively retired groups throughout the region and acts as an advocate for the 'Third Age' in Duhallow. SAOI promotes the participation of older people in local decision making processes as well as encouraging and supporting them to access of the various supports available to them. It helps to promote and value the role and contribution of older people in Duhallow through coordinating the efforts of locally established groups to develop regional responses to their various needs. IRD Duhallow's SAOI Network are currently participating in the LEADER funded Memory through Media training project which aims to explore the themes of memory and reminiscence through film and online social media.
