German columns marched through Twente villages and towns on May 10, 1940. A years-long occupation followed. Almost five years later, the downfall of Nazi Germany was in sight. Twente lay in the liberators' advance route and became a frontline area on March 31, 1945. The first city in Twente to be liberated was Enschede, on April 1. The last German was expelled from Twente on April 10. After five years of occupation, Twente was free again.
