WMTTG: Real-world details and pioneering engineering of the original Masterpiece Optimus Prime

Our 3rd Optimus Prime in a row for WMTTG, but all so fundamentally different from each other! Next time we'll branch back out to other characters. Today we look at the original MP-01 Convoy / Masterpiece Optimus Prime. MP-01 was released in 2003. It spared no expense, and broke the mold in many ways. New engineering techniques like faux body parts persist to this day. The hyper-realistic aesthetic - with rivets, working suspension, pistons, those details you'd expect on a truck rolling through your neighborhood or a giant robot stomping through downtown - has largely been abandoned by modern Masterpiece entrants. The die-cast and paint are turned up to maximum. Even unnecessary / invisible features are here, like that horrific face under his faceplate. We'll go through all of this, and you can watch me fumble through transforming his feet. About the Channel: Welcome to portmanToy.
