Return of the Obra Dinn - Part 6 - Our Top Men On It

As we try and figure out how to get into our last chapters we start to employ some logic to who everyone might be. And, well, what they were employed as. From auteur game developer Lucas Pope, Return of the Obra Dinn is a detective game that puts you in the shoes of an insurance investigator sent to discover the fate of the titular ship and her crew. As the vessel seems to have floated into harbour with all hands missing. Thankfully the East India Company must have some powerful wizards on staff as you are armed with not just the crew's manifest and some helpful sketches of all the crew & passengers but also a magical pocket watch that allows you turn back time and glimpse the disastrous events that befell the ship. Sounds easy, right? Not quite. As, even though this is a fully 3D game and you can can walk around and more or less explore every corner of the ship, it is all rendered in 1 bit graphics. A technologically impressive feat to not only give this world texture and depth with a single colour and some dithering effects but to tell this story. To show everything that happened on board and give these individual characters a personality and enough of a distinctive look that you can start to recognise them despite the visual limitations. This game was praised for a reason when it first came out and it still holds up today. The only downside is this particular visual effect really isn't conducive with Twitch's low bitrate or YouTube's video compression. So I did give Return of the Obra Dinn a go when it first came out but I never played more than about an hour or so. So this was me sitting down and playing through it properly for the very first time. And we did it all on stream, over on Twitch.
