Bird enthusiasts can spot around 80 species of birds, while visitors may also encounter toque macaques, barking deer, wild boar, and other fascinating creatures that inhabit this urban forest sanctuary. ▶️The Royal Forest of the Kandyan Kingdom During the era of the Kandyan Kingdom, Udawattakele was known as "Uda Wasala Watta", meaning the Royal Garden. It was also referred to as the Forbidden Forest, as access was restricted to members of the royal family. This historic woodland played an important role in the royal capital and remains closely connected to Kandy’s rich heritage. ▶️Colonial History Hidden Among the Trees The forest also contains reminders of Sri Lanka’s colonial past. During British rule, Governor Horton established Lady Horton’s Drive, a scenic path through the reserve. Visitors can also discover the remains of an old garrison post and cemetery dating back to the British occupation of Kandy. ▶️A Natural Classroom in the Heart of Kandy Udawattakele was declared a sanctuary in 1938 and continues to serve as an important conservation area. Its diverse collection of giant trees, lianas, shrubs, and native plants make it an ideal destination for environmental education, research, photography, and nature walks. ▶️A Peaceful Escape from City Life Whether you are exploring Kandy’s cultural landmarks or simply looking for a quiet retreat, Udawattakele Forest Reserve offers a refreshing experience filled with birdsong, wildlife, and shaded forest paths. It remains one of Kandy’s most underrated attractions and a must-visit destination for anyone who appreciates nature and history. Credits: Serendip Stories : / @serendipstories-srilanka
