German Women POWs in America: The WW2 Story Almost Forgotten

In 1943, American military police expected a train filled with hardened German soldiers. Instead, the boxcars carried exhausted German women—military auxiliaries, telephone operators, administrative staff, and Red Cross nurses captured in North Africa. Convinced by wartime propaganda that the Americans would torture or execute them, the women were shocked to find clean barracks, proper food, coffee, soap, and strict treatment under the Geneva Convention. Their arrival created a major problem for the U.S. Army, whose entire POW system had been designed for men. Were these women soldiers, civilians, nurses, or enemy combatants? Behind the barbed wire, they maintained discipline and resisted American influence. But the overwhelming abundance of the American home front gradually destroyed the propaganda they had believed. By 1945, many of the same women who had once feared America began begging to remain there rather than return to the ruins of Germany.
