The ZIL-127 Story: How the Soviets Conquered the Greyhound Bus [Soviet/Russian Bus History]
After WWII, the Soviet Union's Moscow Automobile Factory was able to secure a license to produced American GM TDH-3610 transit buses, of which over 1,100 were built (Note: This is an unsubstantiated Wikipedia claim). After the supposed licensing agreement eneded in 1950, the USSR still wanted an American-like intercity bus, of which they admired - especially the big Greyhound buses. In 1952, efforts were underway to produce such a bus. After numerous attempts, some not so successful, the Soviets finally produced their intercity dream bus: The ZIS (later ZIL) 127. The bus was a masterpiece in 1950's American-styled automotive design, with ultra-luxurious seats, akin to those found on the TU-104 jetliner. 851 ZIS/ZIL-127 buses were produced until about 1959/1960. They ran in service up until 1972, operating out of the Moscow main bus station. See and hear the story of the Soviet ZIS/ZIL-127 intercity bus!
