Organic Lab - Partition Coefficient 001
Consider the situation where 15.5 g of caffeine is added to a mixture of 100 mL of water and 100 mL of chloroform. Since water and chloroform are essentially immiscible, two layers form. Given that caffeine is soluble in both water (1.5 g/100mL @ 25 C) and chloroform (14.0 g/100 mL @ 25 C) respectively, it will partition between the two layers.
