The Mother's Delight.

Versions of this one are played in Donegal as reels and highlands, and Michael Coleman and Jim Donohue played it. It's often put in a D modal sort of way, but I worked out, when I was learning tunes from a tape as a kid, that it was easier to bluff it on a C whistle using E modal fingering, as I'm playing here, and I've been bluffing ever since! It is playable with the f natural key on the flute, and is nice with the fiddle that way, but I prefer it in this key for playing solo. The tape mentioned was a compilation of stuff recorded off an old radio cassette player - the thing at the time was to record tracks of your favourite radio music shows onto cassette. It was a track of an accordion player playing this one, and I'm almost sure it was Máirtín O'Connor. It's a great tune anyway.
