What is Local Nature Recovery? The New Strategy, with Simon Lyster

Simon Lyster is chair of the Local Nature Partnership in Essex, which comprises more than 40 member organisations. It has been the lead partnership to develop, test and publish the Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS). These have been mandated in 48 locations in England (mostly whole counties) by the Environment Act of 2021. The responsible authority in Essex is the Essex County Council. Simon is a distinguished lawyer, author, leader and activist. He is former DG of the Wildlife Trusts, and has worked for an advised many conservation organisations and businesses in the UK and overseas. He is a Commissioner at the Essex Climate Action Commission. The LNRS emphasises these principles for natural places and habitats: bigger, better, and more joined up. The map contained in the strategy are the first time every habitat has been identified and mapped, and the LNRS identifies priorities for the future. The first aim is to ensure 25% of the county of Essex is under abundant nature by 2030. Further work in the LNRS focuses on the recovery of key species, such as turtle dove and eel.
