Session Title: Zooming to the Future? Info: Will Self will speak for approximately forty minutes on the impact of bi-directional digital media (the assemblage of the internet and the web) on education in Britain today. Arguing that the Blair era reforms – beginning with the introduction of Academy schools – softened the sector up for a full transition to teaching using media that allow for full quantification and analysis of inputs and outputs. Seen in this way, the pandemic has only confirmed and solidified a growing tendency in our education system to know the price (and quantity) of every thing, but the value of nothing. After Will Self’s talk, he will invite the audience to participate in a lively debate – the livelier, in fact, the better; after all, anything is worse than dead air on a video conference call.
