Scooter and his Stinson 108 -3 Voyager

The Stinson 108-3 is the next aircraft of a member we feature. This is another classic aircraft circa 1948. Its a rag and tube aircraft, meaning its a fabric covered airplane. When this aircraft was built few asphalt runways existed and grass runways littered the countryside. This airplane was built for that environment it like to be operated on grass strip and out of farm fields. The Stinson 108 is an honest 4 person aircraft with a useful load around 1000 pounds, you can load it with people, add some luggage, and still have enough fuel to get some where. The Franklin 165 horsepower engine provide ample power and a smooth ride. The Stinson 108-3 had a few upgrades over earlier models with the addition of large fuel tanks, a stronger main spar allowing a higher max gross weight, a larger tail for more flight stability, and the addition of rudder trim. All of these aircraft originally came with wooden propellers most including this one were upgraded to a metal prop that provides better performance. This Stinson has some other optional upgrades including a vacuum system and instruments and is the Voyager model designed primarily as an aircraft for personal and family travel vs. the Station Wagon model that had a rear seat area designed to haul cargo as well as people.
