Are The OLD WAYS still Viable? Riving Logs to make Lumber!
Time for some back to basics woodworking at the Bushcraft Survival Camp! I split a section of an Aspen log into bolts that I will hew into planks for roofing on my rustic timberframe building. This process is called "riving", and the idea is to split the wood along its fibres, using the natural strength of the wood. I use an axe, mallet and some oak gluts to get the job done!
