This island was given to the goddess Teura-Vahine, who transformed it into a magnificent place, filled with tiare maohi flowers and protected by a sacred taboo. Teura-Vahine was very fond of a turtle that lived on the island. But the inhabitants, jealous of the attention she gave it, captured the turtle, killed it, and ate it. Upon discovering this betrayal, the goddess was filled with sorrow. She threw herself from a cliff into the pool where her turtle lived and disappeared. Before dying, she proclaimed a taboo: anyone who picked the tiare maohi flowers would quickly see them wither between their fingers. Since then, Teura-Vahine has wandered in the spirit world, without finding peace. This legend invites us to reflect on forgiveness, respect for nature, and our cultural heritage.
