Last Wednesday, the twin star players of Heungkuk Life Pink Spiders, Lee Jae-yeong and Lee Da-yeong, have submitted a handwritten apology to their former elementary and middle school teammates for bullying. This was in response to a long list of allegations raised online by a former teammate the previous day. The twins, now 24 years old, are being called to be held accountable for the misconduct they did as schoolchildren, and to make all efforts to ask the victims for forgiveness. Saying that school violence is something that cannot be tolerated under any circumstance, disciplinary action has been taken against the Lee twins. Heungkuk Life Pink Spiders has suspended the Lees indefinitely, effective immediately, meaning they will be banned from the remaining 7 matches of the season. Within hours of the club's decision, the Korea Volleyball Association said the twins will be banned from the national team indefinitely. Despite playing an instrumental role in securing South Korea's place at the Tokyo Olympics, the KVA decided that trying to win an Olympic medal was not as important as punishing the twins for their alleged misconduct. The Korean Volleyball Federation will open an emergency meeting to address ending school bullying, as well as implementing a policy of disciplinary measures for misconduct committed prior to an athlete joining the professional league.
