Zell (Moselle) - Video from https://www.rhein-eifel.tv - Zell an der Mosel, with over 4,000 inhabitants, is one of the larger towns on the Moselle River. The town center of Zell offers a wide variety of restaurants and a pedestrian zone with numerous shops. As is the case throughout almost the entire Moselle Valley, Riesling is traditionally cultivated around the town of Zell. The most famous vineyard is the Schwarze Katz (Black Cat), which, according to legend, got its name from a cat that sat on a wine barrel during an extended wine tasting in the 19th century. A fountain with a hissing tomcat, erected in 1936 in front of the town hall, is dedicated to the successful "Schwarze Katz." The striking historic town hall, built in 1881, is a two-winged brick building with a corner tower. After extensive renovations, it still houses the town administration and the tourist information office. Also worth seeing is the Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Zell, whose interior is dominated by the Rococo style. Only a few buildings remain to tell the story of Zell's eventful past. In 1848, 152 houses burned down, and another twenty buildings perished in 1857. Among the remnants of the town's fortifications, dating from the 13th to 15th centuries, are the six-story Bachturm (Stream Tower) and a three-story Powder Tower with a curved roof. The Bachturm, built of rubble stone, was converted into a gate tower with a wayside shrine at the cemetery in 1899. Zell Castle, a late Gothic corner and bastion castle, was completed in the 12th century. Under Elector Johann von Hagen, the castle was remodeled in 1543, and a new wing facing the street was added. Legend has it that Emperor Maximilian II, with a large entourage, and 300 years later, King Frederick William IV of Prussia, were guests at the castle. Today, the buildings are used as a hotel. The tightest bend of the Moselle River, the Zeller Hamm, is the scenic highlight of the town, and the views from the many vantage points on the hills are truly spectacular. Moselle riverboats regularly stop in the wine town of Zell, and numerous cultural events and wine festivals take place: all the ingredients for a perfect visit to Zell an der Mosel.
