The Western powers, France, and Great Britain, protecting their own interests, could not allow this to happen. Allied forces declared independence for the Omani Empire and, in 1854, launched an invasion of Crimea. Sevastopol was soon besieged, and Russia, seeking to break it, attacked British forces. The Battle of Balaklava ensued, where the Scottish bravery became known as the "Thin Red Line."
