Malbork uczcił pamięć ofiar Rzezi Wołyńskiej i uczestników Plebiscytu na Powiślu.
On July 11, Malbork hosted ceremonies commemorating two important events in Polish history – the 106th anniversary of the Powiśle Plebiscite and the 83rd anniversary of the Volhynia Massacre. Representatives of local government, institutions, organizations, and residents paid tribute to the victims of the genocide and those who fought for the Polish identity of these lands by laying flowers and lighting candles at memorial sites. On Saturday, July 11, Malbork hosted ceremonies commemorating two tragic and extremely important events in Polish history – the 106th anniversary of the Powiśle Plebiscite and the 83rd anniversary of the Volhynia Massacre. The commemorations brought together representatives of local government, institutions, social organizations, veterans, and residents of the city, who jointly paid tribute to the heroes and victims of the events of decades past. The ceremonies began at the plaque (located on the wall of the railway station building) commemorating the first post-war settlers from Volhynia. It was they who, after the end of World War II, were forced to leave their homeland and begin a new life in the Malbork region. Flowers were laid and candles lit at this symbolic site, paying tribute to all Poles who experienced the tragedy of forced relocation and the loss of their homes. Then, participants proceeded to the monument commemorating the fighters of the plebiscite movement, located on Piastowska Street. There, wreaths were also laid and candles were lit, commemorating the efforts of the residents of Powiśle, Warmia, and Mazury, who fought over a century ago to annex these lands to a reborn Poland. This year marks the 83rd anniversary of the Volhynian Massacre – the genocide perpetrated by nationalists from the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) against the Polish population living in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia. The culmination of the crimes occurred on July 11, 1943, during the so-called "Volhynian Massacre." "Bloody Sunday," when over 150 Polish towns were attacked. Historians estimate that approximately 100,000 Poles, mostly women, children, and the elderly, died as a result of these events. July 11th is also a particularly important date in the history of the region. On this day in 1920, the Powiśle Plebiscite was held, a consequence of the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles. The vote included, among others, part of the then Malbork County on the eastern side of the Nogat River. Of the nearly 11,500 eligible residents of Malbork, only 165 voted in favor of annexation to Poland. The result of the plebiscite meant that these areas would remain within Germany, and a new border was drawn between Germany and the Free City of Danzig. This year's commemorations were not only a history lesson but also an expression of remembrance, respect, and gratitude to all who fought for the Polishness of these lands and to the victims of the tragic events of World War II. The joint laying of flowers and lighting of candles became a symbol of our concern for preserving historical memory for future generations.
