In this video, I analyze in a technical and practical way some architectural choices that were very common in our grandparents' houses and that, for various reasons, have been abandoned in modern constructions. It's not that everything was better in the past, but some architectural solutions really offered more thermal and acoustic comfort and functionality than many current apartments. We will talk about how old houses had more generous layouts, with backyards, balconies, well-defined environments, and even spaces that have practically disappeared today, such as the pantry and the breakfast nook. I also analyze the impact of American kitchens, the exaggerated integration of environments, and how this can bring practical problems in everyday life, such as the smell of food throughout the house or exposed laundry areas. Another interesting point is the difference between a separate and integrated service area, in addition to classic elements such as the double laundry sink, which is technically still superior for certain uses. We also talked about something that many people feel but don't always realize: old walls were thicker, made with denser materials, which guaranteed much more acoustic insulation and thermal comfort. Nowadays, due to cost and speed of construction, it's common to find thinner walls, drywall, or hollow blocks, which may insulate sound much less. This explains why many modern apartments let so much noise through between neighbors. Another point that has changed a lot is the materials used in construction and furniture. Old houses used solid wood, parquet or plank floors, and heavy doors that lasted for decades and could be restored. Many current products are made with MDF, MDP, and industrialized materials, which are more accessible and quicker to produce, but don't always have the same durability. I also talk about the secret to the coolness in old houses, such as the higher ceilings and the famous transoms above the doors, which helped with cross-ventilation and the thermal comfort of the house. At the end of the video, I also make an important reflection: many of these changes didn't happen by chance. They are the result of real estate market pressures, the reduction in apartment sizes, and the need to build faster and cheaper. Even so, there are still excellent modern solutions — the question is understanding which choices truly improve the quality of life at home.
