Julian the Apostate, whose full name was Flavius ​​Claudius Julianus, was born in Constantinople in 331 AD, nephew of Constantine the Great. He was orphaned after the dynastic purges and raised under strict tutelage. He studied rhetoric, philosophy, and Greek literature, being a disciple of Libanius and Maximus of Ephesus. Raised in Christianity, he embraced Hellenistic paganism and was therefore called "the Apostate." In 355, he was appointed Caesar in the West and won important military victories in Gaul, especially against the Franks and Alamanni at Strasbourg in 357. In 360, his troops proclaimed him Augustus in Lutetia, and after the death of Constantius II in 361, he became sole emperor. During his reign, he sought to restore the traditional Greco-Roman religion and limit Christian influence, as well as undertake administrative and economic reforms.
