▶ US President Trump has revealed his ambitions for Greenland, suggesting the possibility of using military force to acquire the island. Chris Johnson drew laughter when he said, "It's not MAGA, it's 'Makga.'" Trump also made a show of executive orders on his first day in office, revoking the Biden administration's executive actions, such as repealing the electric vehicle mandate and withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement. This isn't the first time Trump has coveted Greenland. During his first term, he mentioned purchasing Greenland, but that was ultimately rejected by Denmark. However, in his second term, he has hinted at the possibility of using military force, threatening high tariffs if Denmark interferes. So why is Trump so obsessed with Greenland? First, Greenland is a strategically important military location. The Arctic, including Greenland, offers the shortest route from the US to Russia, making it a crucial strategic point even during the Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union. After the end of the Cold War, the Arctic fell out of the United States' sights, but Russia has fortified its Arctic coast by building new military facilities and deploying dozens of icebreakers. A second reason is the potential opening of Arctic shipping routes due to global warming, as ice melts. Greenland's location at a key point connecting the Northwest Passage and the North Atlantic makes it a valuable transit point for maritime logistics. A third reason is that the Arctic, including Greenland, is rich in natural resources such as oil, gas, and minerals. Greenland, in particular, boasts one of the world's largest deposits of rare earth elements, making Greenland essential for the United States to diversify its supply chain. Trump's attempt to purchase Greenland is not a random idea. Two presidents Trump has cited as role models are Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States. During Andrew Jackson's presidency, the United States' western expansion and territorial expansion began in earnest. Approximately 38% of the United States' territory was purchased with money. The Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803, for $15 million, doubled the nation's territory. In 1846, the United States won a border dispute with Mexico, acquiring what are now California, Nevada, and Utah. In the process, the United States purchased what is now Arizona and southern New Mexico from Mexico for $10 million. Then, in 1867, Alaska was purchased from Russia for less than $5 per square kilometer. Thirty years after the purchase, gold was discovered, boosting its economic value. Alaska's rich natural resources were also discovered, truly proving a bonanza for the United States. The other of the two presidents who served as Trump's role models is the 25th President, William McKinley. McKinley, a prominent figure in American expansionism, earned the nickname "Tariff King" for raising tariffs to 50% during his time in the House of Representatives in the name of protecting American industry. During McKinley's term, the United States won the Spanish-American War in 1989, acquiring Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. The Philippines served as the first line of defense against Japan's Pacific expansion and attack on Hawaii. The Philippines gained independence from the United States in 1946. Trump's territorial expansion ambitions extend beyond Greenland to the Gaza Strip. He has hinted at relocating Palestinians from Gaza and developing them into resort areas. This plan to occupy Gaza could be classified as a crime of ethnic cleansing, potentially violating international law, and also raises the issue of resident displacement. Trump pressured neighboring countries, which were potential destinations for the relocation, with a strong statement: "If they don't accept the Gazans, I will cut off aid from Jordan and Egypt." This is similar to the "madman strategy" employed by the 37th President, Richard Nixon, and his administration's diplomat, Henry Kissinger. Furthermore, Trump attracted international attention by announcing during his inauguration that he would reclaim the Panama Canal. This can be seen as a rebuke to China, which sought to use Panama as a launching pad for its expansion into Central and South America and the Maritime Silk Road. Chinese companies invested heavily in ports and infrastructure near the Panama Canal, increasing their national influence.
