Standing Rock: A Dream Deferred #nodapl

Back in early December, Standing Rock was the site of what appeared to be a historic victory. The heroic collective protest effort seemed to prevail, by forcing a complete Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to be ordered. The broad coalition that gathered in those frigid rolling hills celebrated. In the two months since, that narrative changed dramatically. Today marks the water protectors’ last stand as a forced eviction is underway, making this video a moment frozen at a hopeful time. Indigenous people are often considered the best stewards of land. Lack of clear legal rights to property and land use has led to environmental exploitation including deforestation, extractive industrial waste, and pollution. The Skoll World Forum (April 4-7) will explore fault lines between indigenous peoples’ land rights and development—or protection—of the land by government, corporations, and conservation organizations. A dedicated session at the Forum will also highlight successful collaborations between these actors and indigenous people, at a time when creating such common ground faces increasing challenges.
