Marvelous Marvin Hagler defended his middleweight crown 12 times, knocked out nearly everyone they put in front of him, and still had to beg the world for respect. He came out of the Newark riots as a 13-year-old boy with nothing. He landed in Brockton, Massachusetts, the hometown of Rocky Marciano, and trained in freezing Cape Cod winters, running the dunes in combat boots while the biggest names in boxing refused to fight him. Joe Frazier told him to his face he had three strikes against him: black, southpaw, and good. It took an act of Congress just to get him a title shot. He won that title in London, and the crowd hurled bottles at him before they could put the belt around his waist. He went to court and legally changed his first name to Marvelous because the networks would not say it. He gave the sport its most violent and thrilling eight minutes ever against Thomas Hearns. And then Sugar Ray Leonard came out of retirement, danced for 12 rounds, and the judges handed him Hagler's crown on a scorecard so bad the promoter called it the worst he had seen in 50 years.
