México a Través de los Siglos is an ongoing audiovisual research and 4K restoration initiative conceived and directed by visual artist Rafael Corzo, MFA, functioning as a free and publicly accessible digital museum. The project is dedicated to the scholarly study, preservation, and interpretation of Mexican history and cultural memory through archival moving image. Developed as an extension of Corzo’s studio practice into the digital sphere, it functions as a long-form historical archive that situates music, cinema, documentary footage, and vernacular urban imagery within their historical, social, political, and cultural contexts. Mexico, Latin America, and Latino communities in the United States face ongoing challenges in cultural transmission, including unequal access to formal education, historical inequality, and the fragmentation or loss of audiovisual records. Oral traditions—such as popular song—have long functioned as alternative forms of historical knowledge, yet much cultural memory remains inaccessible or decontextualized. Through restoration and contextualization, the project reactivates Mexico’s audiovisual record and presents it as a living historical continuum. 🎞 HISTORICAL CONTEXT & RESTORATION Mexico’s audiovisual heritage faces major preservation challenges, from early 20th-century film degradation to the loss of late 20th-century magnetic media (VHS, Betamax, U-Matic). Events such as the 1982 Cineteca Nacional fire and 1990s media restructuring made preservation of these eras critical. For the first time, broad audiences can access this material through a free, publicly accessible digital museum. 🔧 Restoration Methodology Each production is grounded in historical verification and original research. Archival materials undergo a supervised restoration workflow including stabilization, denoising, artifact mitigation, dynamic range correction, chromatic balancing, color reconstruction, and detail recovery. The workflow integrates professional editing systems, digital color pipelines, Blackmagic RAW processing, and frame-level reconstruction in Adobe Photoshop. AI-assisted tools such as Topaz Astra (precise mode) are used conservatively to recover degraded textures while preserving historical authenticity. All enhancements are manually reviewed. The goal is preservation fidelity: restoring clarity while maintaining the integrity of the original record. 🎬 Editorial Approach Music, cinema, and everyday urban imagery are situated within their historical moment to reconstruct lived experience. Streets, public spaces, workers, families, and people in their daily lives are treated as central protagonists of historical continuity. The archive documents both everyday culture and enduring cultural expression. Music often functions as a historiographic framework. ⚖️ Editorial Position Content is presented within a broader historical context. Inclusion or exclusion of subjects responds to curatorial considerations and does not constitute endorsement or moral positioning. The project does not seek to romanticize or condemn history, but to observe and preserve it as a complex human record. 🧠 Interpretive Visualization When documentation is unavailable, clearly identified artistic visualizations may be used in a limited and transparent manner to support narrative continuity. ⚖️ Compliance and Ethical Standards All content is produced in accordance with platform guidelines and applicable copyright frameworks, aligned with principles of transformative use, historical preservation, commentary, and research. 🌍 Cultural Vision Mexico is approached as a civilizational continuum across deep historical time, foregrounding the dignity of everyday life over spectacle. 🎨 Artist Rafael Corzo’s practice spans ceramics, sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, and moving image, exploring memory, identity, and consciousness. 🛠 Workflow and Tools Adobe Photoshop Adobe Premiere Pro DaVinci Resolve Blackmagic RAW workflows HandBrake OBS CapCut AI-assisted tools (including Topaz Astra, precise mode) are used under manual supervision to support restoration while prioritizing authenticity. 🔗 Licensing rafaelcorzo.com High-resolution 4K masters available for film, museum, and academic use. 📌 Copyright All materials include substantial transformation by Rafael Corzo.
