We Found a Hidden Hot Spring on the Gibb River Road That Nobody Talks About
We thought we knew what to expect on the Gibb River Road, but discovering a hidden hot spring inside Emma Gorge was something nobody told us about. From freezing swimming holes to crocodile sightings and world famous scones, this is what it actually looks like to travel the Kimberley. We are Richard, Tanya, and Django, and this week on Wander & Hook, we are taking the Land Cruiser and the Vacationer Roughrider deep into the East Kimberley. We set up a base camp on the banks of the Pentecost River to explore the legendary El Questro Station. Our first stop was Emma Gorge. We hiked in early to beat the heat, and while the main pool at the end of the gorge is absolutely spectacular, the water is freezing cold. But just off to the side, hidden in the rocks, we found a natural thermal hot spring trickling down the gorge wall. It was the perfect spot to warm up, and a complete surprise. After Emma Gorge, we tackled the muddy 4WD tracks into Zebedee Springs. Sitting in these cascading thermal pools surrounded by a dense palm forest is one of the most unique experiences you can have on the Gibb River Road. We also attempted the hike into El Questro Gorge, navigating deep water crossings and boulder hopping our way to the halfway pool before the heat and the fading light forced us to turn back. Back at our Pentecost River camp, the Kimberley wildlife put on a show. We spotted a crocodile sunning itself on the opposite bank, and Richard managed to accidentally catch a Barramundi in his cast net while looking for mullet bait. Leaving El Questro Station behind, we hitched up the caravan and hit the heavy corrugations of the Gibb River Road. We had a classic outback traffic jam involving a stubborn cow, before pulling into Ellenbrae Station for their famous scones with jam and cream (which Django thoroughly lab tested). We ended the day at Drysdale River Station, grabbing a massive chicken burger at the outdoor bar and planning our next big push north to Kalumburu. If you are planning a Kimberley road trip, this stretch of the Gibb River Road is an absolute must do. Yes, a high clearance 4WD is highly recommended for El Questro Station. While you can sometimes reach the main station area in a 2WD during the dry season, accessing the best spots like Zebedee Springs and El Questro Gorge requires driving through deep water crossings and rough, muddy tracks. Is the water at Emma Gorge cold? Yes, the main swimming hole at the end of the Emma Gorge hike is notoriously freezing cold, as it receives very little direct sunlight. However, there is a very small, hidden thermal hot spring trickling from the rocks on the right hand side of the pool where you can sit and warm up. Can you take a caravan on the Gibb River Road? Yes, you can take a caravan on the Gibb River Road, but it must be a dedicated off road caravan. The road is unsealed, heavily corrugated, and features multiple river crossings. We tow our Vacationer Roughrider off road caravan along the Gibb, but you must drive to the conditions and lower your tyre pressures significantly. Are there crocodiles at El Questro Station?
