【BB31-03】 Let Me Now Go To The Field. An Adaptation of Ruth Chapter-2. @Isa11ten12 #ruthandnaomi
Title: Let Me Now Go To The Field (Adaptation of Ruth Chapter-2) —- A. Introduction “In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” ~ Judges 21:25 Yet what seemed to be chance brought Ruth to a community of faithful and kind people, where she humbly sought permission to glean among the reapers. Was it by chance? This song is an adaptation of Ruth Chapter 2 as well as the following key scripture: 1. Leviticus 19:9–10 And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest… ; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the LORD your God. —- 2. Leviticus 19:34 But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. —- 3. Deuteronomy 15:7–8 If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth. —- 4. Ruth 2:20 And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the LORD, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead… ————— B. Lyrics: [Title: Let Me Now Go to the Field] [Verse 1] Let me now go to the field, Where the barley greets the day; (Ruth 2:2-3) For the stranger and the poor, Something still is laid away. (Leviticus 19:9-10; Deuteronomy 24:19) Not all gathered, Not forgotten, Not cut bare from edge to edge; (Leviticus 19:9-10; Deuteronomy 24:19) Room is left for weary hands, And today I seek my bread. (Leviticus 19:10; Ruth 2:2) [Verse 2] Let me walk the harvest rows In the cool and early light; (Ruth 2:3) Grain was left beside the way Long before I came in sight. (Leviticus 19:9-10; Deuteronomy 24:19) Yet I pray thee, Let me gather, Let me glean among the sheaves; (Ruth 2:7) Though the gift is freely given, Still I come on bended knees. (Ruth 2:7; Ruth 2:10) [Chorus] Was it chance that brought me here, To a field prepared for me? (Ruth 2:3) Was it chance that grain was left For the stranger by decree? (Leviticus 19:9-10; Deuteronomy 24:19) Or the kindness of the LORD, Making room where I may stand? (Leviticus 19:34; Ruth 2:20) Under wings I do not know, Yet I rest within His hand. (Ruth 2:12) [Verse 3] “The LORD be with you,” Boaz said, To the reapers in the field. (Ruth 2:4) “The LORD bless thee,” Came the answer, As the golden barley swayed. (Ruth 2:4) Word spoken, Word returned, In the labor of the day; (Ruth 2:4) Here the work and worship meet, Walking in a single way. (Ruth 2:4-5) [Verse 4] Then he called me, “My daughter,” Though a stranger I had been; (Ruth 2:8; Ruth 2:10) Water drawn by other hands, Bread prepared and freely shared. (Ruth 2:9; Ruth 2:14) Why such favor? Why such kindness? Why remember one like me? (Ruth 2:10; Ruth 2:13) Yet his words were soft as evening, And his welcome gave me peace. (Ruth 2:13-14) [Chorus] Was it chance that brought me here, To a field prepared for me? (Ruth 2:3) Was it chance that grain was left For the stranger by decree? (Leviticus 19:9-10; Deuteronomy 24:19) Or the kindness of the LORD, Making room where I may stand? (Leviticus 19:34; Ruth 2:20) Under wings I do not know, Yet I rest within His hand. (Ruth 2:12) [Verse 5] From the morning until now, Through the brightness of the day, (Ruth 2:7) Barley gathered, Barley beaten, Every stalk a gift received. (Ruth 2:17) And the bread that once had filled me Still recalled another need; (Ruth 2:14; Ruth 2:18) What was given I would carry, For Naomi waits for me. (Ruth 2:18) [Bridge] Handfuls left among the sheaves, More than custom could explain; (Ruth 2:15-16) More than duty, More than measure, More than I had hoped to gain. (Ruth 2:15-16; Ruth 2:13) In this land the LORD has planted Kindness in the hearts of men; (Ruth 2:20; Deuteronomy 15:7-8) As the furrows hold the barley, So His word lives on in them. (Leviticus 19:9-10; Leviticus 19:34; Deuteronomy 15:7-8) [Final Chorus] Was it chance that brought me here, To a field prepared for me? (Ruth 2:3) Was it chance that mercy met me At the ending of my road? (Ruth 1:19-22; Ruth 2) Or the kindness of the LORD, Guiding paths I could not see? (Ruth 2:20; theme of providence throughout Ruth) Under wings I’ve come beneath, Learning where the stranger goes. (Ruth 2:12; Leviticus 19:34) [Outro] Blessed be he of the LORD, Whose kindness hath not forsaken The living and the dead. (Ruth 2:20) Blessed be he of the LORD, Whose kindness hath not forsaken The living and the dead. (Ruth 2:20) And the stranger found a home. (Leviticus 19:34; Ruth 1:16; Ruth 2:12) Beneath the shadow of His wings. (Ruth 2:12; Psalm 36:7) .
