On 4 and 5 October 1989, ITN joined East German refugees on the last leg of their train journey from the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Demokratische Republik, DDR) to the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland, BRD), more commonly known as West Germany. An interview with a new arrival captured the mixture of excitement and trepidation felt by those who had left everything behind in order to begin a new life, while cameras recorded a number of tearful platform reunions in the West German town of Hof.
