QUENTA SILMARILLION The Tale of the Silmarils Chapter 1: Of the Beginning of Days The Wise say that the First War began before the creation of Arda was complete, and before anything grew upon the earth's soil or wandered upon it; and for a long time Melkor held the upper hand. But in the midst of the war, hearing deep in the Heavens of the battles in the Lesser Realm, a spirit of great strength and courage came to the aid of the Valar; and Arda was filled with the peals of his laughter. Thus came Tulkas the Strong, whose wrath passes like a hurricane, driving clouds and darkness before him. And Melkor retreated before his wrath and laughter, and left Arda, and for many years peace reigned there. But Tulkas remained and became one of the Valar of the Realm of Earth; Melkor already languished in the Dark Beyond, and his hatred was forever given to Tulkas. In those days, the Valar were tidying the seas, lands, and mountains, and Yavanna finally sowed the seeds she had long ago shaped. And when the fires were extinguished or buried beneath the primordial mountains, the need for light arose—and Aulë, at Yavanna's request, made two mighty lamps to illuminate Middle-earth, which he had created amidst the surrounding seas. Then Varda filled the lamps, and Manwë blessed them, and the Valar set them upon high pillars, higher than all the mountains of the later ages. They raised one lamp near the north of Middle-earth and named it Illuin; the second was raised in the south and named Ormal. Then the seeds Yavanna had sown began to sprout and reach for the light, and a multitude of plants, great and small, arose—mosses and ferns, grasses and trees, their summits crowned with clouds like mountains, their roots immersed in green twilight. And the Valar gathered on Almaren—and because they feared no evil, and the light of Illuin was bright, they did not see the shadow cast by Melkor in the north: for he became as dark as the Night of the Void.
