2024 SEGD Fellow: Marquise Stillwell | Designing for People, Place, and Possibility

Named a 2024 SEGD Fellow, Marquise Stillwell is a designer, researcher, filmmaker, and community builder whose work explores the intersection of people, cities, systems, and culture. Through a portfolio of organizations including Openbox, Deem Journal, Urban Ocean Lab, Stae, and Opendox, he has spent more than two decades creating platforms, projects, and conversations that center equity, participation, and collective futures. This presentation took place as Marquise accepted his SEGD Fellowship during the 2024 SEGD Conference Experience in Dallas on September 28, 2024. In this thoughtful talk, Marquise reflects on the responsibility of designers in a time of climate uncertainty, rapid urban change, and growing social complexity. Sharing insights from his work across design research, city planning, data visualization, publishing, and filmmaking, he challenges us to ask a deceptively simple question: What is enough? From community-centered planning in San Diego and San Francisco to building new models for knowledge sharing through Deem Journal and Urban Ocean Lab, Marquise demonstrates how design can create deeper connections between people, place, and the systems that shape everyday life.
