#space #universe #science #physics The universe is doomed to collapse—and there are five scientifically proven scenarios for its end. Let's examine each of these apocalypses. This video is primarily based on the book "The End of Everything: 5 Astrophysical Scenarios for the End of the Universe" by theoretical cosmologist Katie Mack. Katie is a researcher of dark matter, vacuum decay, and the epoch of reionization. I haven't found a more interesting book on the topic. Today, physicists know for sure: the universe cannot exist forever. Dark energy, which makes up 70% of the cosmos, accelerates the expansion of space. By studying the cosmic microwave background radiation—an echo of the Big Bang—and observing distant galaxies, scientists reconstruct the past and predict the future. Each possible scenario for the end of the universe is based on modern discoveries in quantum mechanics, relativity, and cosmology. The first two scenarios concern the fate of the expansion: the Big Crunch and heat death. If gravity prevails, in trillions of years galaxies will begin to converge, temperatures will soar to unimaginable levels, and the cosmos will collapse into a fiery pinpoint. But supernova measurements have shown the opposite—the expansion is accelerating thanks to a mysterious cosmological constant. This leads to heat death. The third scenario—the Big Rip—is the most dramatic apocalypse associated with phantom dark energy. If the parameter w of dark energy turns out to be less than -1 (even by a billionth), space will begin to expand so rapidly that it will rupture. The fourth scenario—vacuum decay—can happen at any moment, even right now. The discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider showed that our vacuum is metastable, that is, it is in a "false" state, not at a true energy minimum. Quantum tunneling can at any moment create a bubble of "true vacuum" that will expand at the speed of light, destroying everything in its path. Inside the bubble, all physical constants will change—particle masses, electron charge, the laws of chemistry. Atoms will decay, and space will become gravitationally unstable and collapse. The fifth scenario offers hope: a Big Bounce in a cyclic universe. The ekpyrotic model and Roger Penrose's theory suggest that the Big Bang is not a unique beginning, but another collision of a brane with a parallel universe in extra dimensions of space.
