// Performing a Two-Way Repeated Measures ANOVA in SPSS // An ANOVA compares the mean between groups. This can also be done for the same group over time, hence the term repeated measures ANOVA. A two-way ANOVA is performed when there are two factors influencing a dependent variable. It tests whether there is a significant difference in the dependent variable between time points (null hypothesis: no difference). Unlike the t-test, an ANOVA can perform this test with more than two time points without the probability of committing a Type I error exceeding the alpha error level (e.g., 5%). This probability increases to 1 − (0.95)^n with "n" tests. With ten groups, the probability of committing a Type I error is already 40% if pairwise comparisons are performed using t-tests. An ANOVA avoids this problem and is therefore preferred for comparing means of more than two groups.
