ETYMOLOGY Albizia julibrissin boasts a truly wide range of names, among the most common: Persian silk tree, Constantinople acacia, and tree acacia, and pink siris. Other names include Lenkoran acacia or bastard tamarind. Other names, more generic and sometimes misleading, include Chinese silk tree, silk tree, or mimosa. Interesting names, however, are those that refer to a particular characteristic of this plant, namely its slow closing of its leaves at night or during rainy periods. Here, we find the Persian word shabkhosb, meaning "sleeping," and the Chinese word hehuan, literally "happy closed," symbolizing a happy couple in bed. Or in Japan, we find nemunoki, nemurinoki, and nenenoki, all meaning "sleeping tree." TAXONOMY It belongs to the Fabaceae family. The Albizia genus includes approximately 150 species of deciduous trees, shrubs, and climbers, often found in areas with poor soil in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Australia.
