Why Deaf People Fingerspell "Random" Words 🤔 | What Every Interpreter Needs to Know

Have you ever watched a Deaf person fingerspell a word and thought, "Why didn't they just use the sign?" 🤔 Many interpreters learn the traditional rules of fingerspelling: ✅ Names ✅ Places ✅ Brand names ✅ Technical terms without established signs ✅ Words that require clarification or specificity But here's something many interpreting students never learn. Deaf people don't always follow those rules, and that's intentional. Sometimes we choose to fingerspell a word that does have an established sign because we want to control our word choice, avoid ambiguity, emphasize a concept, or make sure our exact meaning comes across. This happens frequently in everyday conversations and especially in Video Relay Service (VRS) calls. For interpreters, this creates a unique challenge. When an unexpected word is fingerspelled, you often don't have context to predict it. Your brain can't rely on expected vocabulary. Instead, your receptive fingerspelling skills have to be strong enough to recognize the word as it's being produced. That's why mastering receptive fingerspelling isn't just about recognizing names or cities. It's about accurately processing any word a Deaf person intentionally chooses to fingerspell. In this video, we'll discuss: -The general rules of fingerspelling -Why Deaf people intentionally break those "rules" -How fingerspelling gives Deaf people control over meaning -Why this challenges interpreters, especially in VRS settings -How to strengthen your receptive fingerspelling skills If you're ready to take your receptive fingerspelling to the next level, check out our Fingerspelling PLUS (Proficiency Levels Up Skills) course. It's designed to help interpreters improve speed, accuracy, and confidence, even when there's little or no context. 👇 Work with us:https://linktr.ee/rainonesisters If you found this video helpful, please like, comment, and subscribe for more ASL and interpreting content from the Rainone Sisters. #ASL #Fingerspelling #SignLanguageInterpreter #MedicalInterpreter #ASLInterpreting #VRS #DeafCommunity #InterpreterTraining
