The Plant That Lost Its Roots—and Learned to Steal
What happens when a plant abandons its roots, loses most of its leaves, and gives up the ability to survive on its own? Dodder—also known as Cuscuta, strangleweed, devil’s hair, or the vampire vine—is one of the most extraordinary parasitic plants on Earth. Its pale, thread-like stems wrap around other plants before producing specialized organs called haustoria, which penetrate the host and connect directly to its vascular system. Once attached, Dodder draws water, sugars, minerals, and other compounds from its victim. But modern research has revealed that this relationship goes much deeper than simple feeding. RNA molecules and proteins can move between Dodder and its host. Cuscuta campestris can also send specialized microRNAs into host tissues, where they target messenger RNAs and suppress genes involved in the plant’s defensive response. Over evolutionary time, some Dodder species have even incorporated genes acquired from other plants through horizontal gene transfer.
