Cleveland crash following pursuit by sheriff's deputies raises questions about police chase policies

Cuyahoga County Council President Dave Miller is raising concerns over the sheriff's department's vehicle pursuit policy after a weekend chase ended with one woman dead and multiple people seriously injured. Early Sunday morning, the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department says deputies saw a vehicle near downtown Cleveland driving recklessly with no headlights. Deputies suspected the driver may have been drunk or impaired and attempted to pull the car over, but the suspect sped off. According to officials, deputies requested and were granted permission to pursue by a supervisory officer, as per the department's policy. A case report shows deputies reached speeds exceeding 100 mph during the chase. One officer wrote, "Although the pursuit involved high speeds, I determined that allowing an impaired and reckless driver to continue unimpeded posed a greater risk to public safety than terminating the pursuit." Two minutes after the pursuit began, the suspect struck the vehicle of 37-year-old Sharday Elder. Elder later died at the hospital, and two passengers in the suspect's car were critically injured and remain in the hospital.
