Fortschritt ZT 304 – The Red One from Schönebeck | The Moving Story of a Restoration In this documentary, we follow Rainer Otto and his faithfully restored Fortschritt ZT 304. Delivered in 1973, the ZT 304 belonged to the 304 series and was designed as a so-called "light version" for industrial use. Therefore, it was not equipped with a power take-off (PTO), a hydraulic lift, or a low-loader as standard. The tractor reliably performed its duties until the end of 1992. Afterward, its trail went cold. For many years, the tractor stood abandoned and was increasingly forgotten. Nature reclaimed it piece by piece. In 2009, Rainer Otto rediscovered the ZT almost by chance. During a bike ride, he noticed a cab roof protruding from the tall weeds. Intrigued, he inquired about it—and found the long-abandoned Fortschritt ZT 304. Its condition was sobering. The engine had suffered damage from sitting idle, water was trapped in the exhaust, the cab was badly damaged, and the entire tractor was covered in dirt, grease, and rust. For many, it would have been destined for the scrap heap. But for Rainer Otto, that very day marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey. With immense patience, expertise, and countless hours of work, he painstakingly restored the ZT 304, step by step, back to its original condition. Just one year later, the forgotten wreck had been transformed into an impressive Fortschritt ZT 304. This documentary combines historical photographs from 1973 and 1992 with contemporary film footage.
