Demo Mahasiswa Jadi 'Alarm' bagi Presiden Prabowo, Pemerintah Diminta Dengar Suara Rakyat!

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV - Student demonstrations in various cities and regions across Indonesia should be a serious alarm for the country's rulers. The students' voices represent the voice of the people, who are uneasy about the policies and actions of those in power that have fueled injustice in society. Student protests against the increase in non-subsidized fuel prices certainly reflect concerns about the weakening purchasing power of the public due to rising prices of basic necessities. Furthermore, the threat of layoffs continues to haunt the business world due to the weakening rupiah exchange rate and unstable global economic conditions. Meanwhile, amidst the difficult economic situation and limited fiscal space in our state budget, President Prabowo has shown no signs of adopting a different policy regarding the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG). This is despite Coordinating Minister for Food, Zulkifli Hasan, stating that the MBG program has been wasted one trillion rupiah every month. The public believes that this MBG waste could have been used to subsidize fuel to prevent price increases. Amidst the intense protests against the MBG program, the BGN budget meeting in the House of Representatives (DPR) was held behind closed doors. Ironically, the proposal to hold a closed-door deliberation meeting actually came from the House of Representatives (DPR). The DPR, which represents the voice of the people, should act critically and oversee the government, speaking out if there is potential for mismanagement or state losses. At a time when public unrest and protests are no longer being heard by the government and the DPR, taking to the streets is the only option to express aspirations. President Prabowo has repeatedly stated that he is acting on a mandate given by the people. Therefore, now is the time for President Prabowo to truly listen to the voices of the people, represented by the students.
