How to find free Li-Ion batteries from the street and use them in projects

There are many types of batteries, but recently lithium-based batteries are all the hype because of their energy density because they are relatively easy to charge and use and offer a good range of voltage for most electronics projects. One great source of free batteries is these "smoke machines" that are unfortunately becoming quite popular. They are really bad for your health so please, do not use them but if you happen to find one thrown in the street or if you know someone that uses them, please collect them and salvage the batteries from inside. A typical battery inside will have a capacity of around 400 to 500mAh which is great for small sensor-based applications.
