Outgrowing an Identity: The Grief No One Talks About

Have you ever kept trying to live from an identity you’ve already outgrown, even though it no longer works? In this episode, I talk about the grief, confusion, and quiet heartbreak that come when the life you built no longer fits who you’ve become. This conversation is for women in midlife who are navigating identity change, career loss, reinvention, and the disorienting space between who you were and who you’re becoming. Outgrowing an identity rarely happens all at once. There’s usually no clear ending, no clean break. Instead, you keep trying to live your life the same way you always have, even though something inside you knows it’s not working anymore. In this episode, I share my own experience of trying to hold on long after I’d already changed. I talk about what happened when my career fell apart, why shame often shows up during identity loss, and how grief gets mistaken for failure. I also explore why letting go feels so frightening, and why it’s actually a necessary part of becoming more aligned with who you are now. If you’re in that uncomfortable in-between space, where the old version of your life no longer fits but the next chapter isn’t clear yet, you’re not alone. And you’re not broken. If this resonates, I’d love to hear your experience in the comments.
