Karunashraya Architecture Case Study | An Abode of Compassion | Hospice Designed By Ar. Sanjay Mohe

*Karunashraya Architecture Case Study Have you ever thought, that Architecture can bring about A RAY OF HOPE in someone’s life? It can bring actually about PIECE and CARE in the life of a person when he reaches such a stage that there is no cure and the only way out is ‘CARE’ So the building which I am talking about is a “hospice center” in Bangalore which is known as the Karunashraya Hospice Trust in Bangalore Karunashraya – literally meaning “abode of compassion”- is a joint project of Indian Cancer Society and Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar. Karunashraya provides free-of-cost quality palliative care to advanced stage cancer patients who are beyond curative medical treatment. Located in Bengaluru on the Old Airport-Varthur Main Road near the Kundalahalli Junction, the lush greenery and impressive architecture of the facility has won acclaim as one of ‘ the most well designed hospice buildings completed between 1990 and 1999′ What is a hospice? Hospice care is a type of health care that focuses on the palliation of a terminally ill patient's pain and symptoms and attending to their emotional and spiritual needs at the end of life. Hospice care prioritizes comfort and quality of life by reducing pain and suffering. MISSION To provide compassionate palliative care for people with a life-limiting illness, and for those important to them, through quality medical, emotional, spiritual and social support. VISION We will provide the highest quality in-patient and home-based palliative care, free of cost, to people with a life-limiting illness We will continuously improve the quality of palliative care provided through research, training and innovation. We will play a lead role in the advocacy of palliative care. And the humble and caring building, Karunashraya Bangalore was designed by Ar. Sanjay Mohe in the year 1998 and he was awarded the State Architect of the Year in 1999 which bought a ray of hope in the patient’s life Brief- To design a peaceful and comfortable environment that would bring HOPE for the terminally ill who are in the last stage of their lives The functional requirements consisted of Administrative facilities, Auditorium, Treatment Wards, Staff Facilities, Day Care, Morgue etc. So the most interesting part would be to see how the design has managed to bring about hope in the lives of people. Planning- The treatment wards are zoned in such a way that they are located quite inside in a quieter zone which open either into a water body or the courtyards where the patients can sit in the corridors and observe the green spaces or water body completely in the realm of nature. The green areas and the water body forms a major part of this plan around which all the wards and built spaces are designed When observing the built vs the open ratio of this building it can be concluded that the open spaces form the major part of this building as compared to the built spaces which is a important step in bridging the inside and the outside Water plays an important role in creating a calm and quieter ambience whereas the bubbling effect of water has a soothing effect which tends to give you more ENERGY, STRENGTH and HOPE When there is no CURE, there is CARE #karunashrayacasestudy#karunashrayabangalorearchitecture#karunashrayahospicecasestudy ******************************************************** Other Architectural Case Studies Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya Architecture Case Study -    • Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya | Architectural...   CEPT University Architecture Case Study -    • CEPT University Case Study | School Withou...   Virasat e Khalsa Anandpur Sahib Architecture Case Study -    • Virasat E Khalsa Heritage Museum | Anandpu...   ******************************************************** Timecodes 0:00 – Introduction to Case Study 1:55 – Karunashraya Hospice Introduction 3:04 – Design Challenges for this Hospice Building 3:53 – Design Philosophy of Architect Sanjay Mohe 4:28 – Spatial Planning, Circulation of the Hospice Complex 8:48 – Spatial Features of its Architecture 13:47 – Structural Arrangement of the Building 14:40 – Material Palette used in the Karunashraya Trust 15:06 – Climatic Response of Karunashraya 15:51 – Smart and Genius Moves in Planning of this Palliative care 18:45 – When there is no cure, there is care ******************************************************** My Filming Equipments ● Green Screen : https://amzn.to/3vNdPGu ● Mic for Audio Recording : https://amzn.to/3miHq7N ● Logitech C922 Pro for Video Recording : https://amzn.to/3bhFkP0 ● Digitek LED Light: https://amzn.to/3bbX6mW ● Lenovo Legion Y540 Laptop: https://amzn.to/3Gr5D3z ● Seagate Hard drive: https://amzn.to/3vNJcRt ******************************************************** Music in the Video - http://www.bensound.com Video Footage Credits – Karunashraya BHT, ThisIsStudio33 Project Visuals – Karunashraya Official Website Research References Karunashraya Hospice Trust Website ******************************************************** Thank You So Much For Watching
