The author of this gem is the Russian Dimitry Fedorovich Petrov (1909-1987; not to be confused with Alexander, the creator of the much-analyzed Petrov Defense). His work as a genetic biologist, as well as in other branches of science, did not prevent him from composing more than 300 chess studies. In fact, it is safe to say that this profession contributed to the exceptional quality of his artistic endgames: precision was the guiding principle of his life.
