Exploring St. Mary’s Church Maliçan & Hiking Near the Greek Border | Albania

Welcome back to The Nature & Culture Group of Sarandë. In today’s adventure, we explore the beautiful mountain village of Maliçan in southern Albania, beginning with a visit to St. Mary’s Church, an Orthodox church built in 1882. stunning aerial footage of the church, surrounding valley views, and the peaceful mountain landscape on a 6 mile hike covering nearly 12,000 steps. This scenic route near the Greek border was once a rough trail cut into the hillsides, but is now fully tarmacked, making the journey much easier (although still very uphill!). Along the route we also pass signs of the region’s strong Greek influence, visit a monument honouring Charalampos Papoutsis, and stop to refill our bottles at a natural spring water supply and meet a friend before the return journey.
