Israel, according to Bertolini, considers Iran its "great bogeyman," and the conflict against Tehran the strategically decisive one. While remaining operationally more moderate at this stage, the Israeli government does not want the United States to withdraw, thus leaving more room for Iranian influence. Bertolini also links this strategy to the desire, which he attributes to Israel, not to withdraw from southern Lebanon, the Golan Heights, the West Bank, and Gaza.
