T Brinda’s Rare 1975 AIR Concert | Muthuswamy Dikshitar Radio Special | 113th Birthday Tribute
It is early in the morning. The soft blue of dawn has barely begun to touch the edges of the sky. Somewhere in the house, an agarbathi sends up a thin curl of smoke — sandalwood, gentle and insistent, filling the veranda with its quiet perfume. The rustle of a veshti, the faint clink of the bells from the pooja room, the drone of a tanpura — and then, from the old All India Radio set, her voice. T Brinda — Unhurried, luminous and utterly inward. The air itself seems to still as she begins Cheta Sri Balakrishnam in Dwijavanthi — each phrase a garland of bhakthi, each note resting lightly on silence. It is 1975, the bicentenary of Muthuswamy Dikshitar, and AIR has invited her to offer her homage. What unfolds is no mere concert, but an invocation — Dikshitar through Brinda’s veiled, meditative artistry. Begada unfurls like temple lamps at dawn, Tyagarajaya Namaste radiating quiet grandeur. Veena Pustaka Dharini in Vegavahini shimmers like a hidden jewel — a raga so rare, so intimate to the Dhanammal lineage that Brinda’s own daughter was named Vegavahini, in quiet reverence to their family’s mastery of this raga. Each sangati glides with that unmistakable Brinda subtlety — never ornate, always inevitable. And then, a moment of pure grace — Sri Venugopala in Kurinji. This is the only surviving recording of Brinda singing this piece, her voice tracing the raga’s tender curves with unfathomable sensitivity. The mridangam breathes with her, the violin follows like a shadow. It is as if time itself pauses to listen. As the final moments of the concert fades, one feels not an ending but a continuation — the day outside now bathed in gold, the agarbathi spent, yet its fragrance still lingering. In that lingering, in that echo of Brinda’s voice, lives the essence of the morning, of music, of Dikshitar himself.
