Knight of Knights [ナイトオブナイツ] Game Sample - PC/Doujin

Original Air Date: December 21st, 2009 This is a pretty popular freeware game in Japan that I first learned about by my friend, Highretrogameblood89. I couldn't make a video for it originally, but for some strange reason, my new Windows 7 computer plays it with no noticable problems...except when you minimize the game and try to enter back into the game...everything is black and unviewable. The game is broken into different stages...and Tomoshibi (the doujin circle), has implemented various features in the game. One of Tomoshibi's most notable features (which is implemented in all of their games that I've played) is the feature to attack with your left AND right hand. This doesn't sound special on pen and paper, but I assure you, it's a cool feature. For example, different weapons have different features and different attacks. Lapis, the blond-haired main character of sorts (which we didn't use) has a shield and sword. With one button, you can have him use his shield hand to block attacks and another button to attack with his sword. With two swords in both hands, you can execute more elaborate combos by pressing the attack buttons in combinations. For example X, square, X, square might be a combo on the controller...or X, X, X, X, square. You can also charge attacks in EACH hand to do sword/club/magic combos, or charge both hands together to perform powerful magic attacks. An example of on intricate two handed combo could be X, X, X, X, Charge X one cycle, release X, X, X, X, X, Square, Square, Square, Square, charge Square one cycle, release square. Yeah, that's hella awesome...speaking of charging one "cycle", you have two bars that form a "charge ring". One button charges one half of the ring, while the other hand button charges the other. The bars can be charged up to three cycles and each cycle bears a different special ability. You also can equip different spell books and rods influence what magic a character can do too, as well as magic strength. You can also incorporate magic into combos too and intricate juggles to deal massive damage. The game is sorta like a roguelike, as items are random and most restorative items have random effects each play (except crystals, which always restore health). You also start at different places in stages. It's a fun, but difficult game. I do, however, have one major gripe...the controls are pretty stiff. There are delays between running and linking combos. I'll want to stop in front of an enemy to start a combo and instead, a running attack will be performed. Aligning yourself to cast magic in the right direction can also be a little cumbersome and the view should have been panned out a little more, as you'll often find yourself getting hit by enemies offscreen.
