Sonny Rollins & "Airegin" | The Jazz Real Book (EP. 4)

"Airegin," a Jazz Standard by Sonny Rollins, derives its name from spelling "Nigeria" backward. It was first recorded in 1954 on the Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins album. Rollins, born in 1930, became a premier tenor saxophonist. Despite legal troubles and heroin addiction, he emerged focused and practiced rigorously on the Williamsburg Bridge from 1959 to 1961. The tune's 36-bar form features an angular melody and interesting chords showcasing Rollins' clever harmonic organization. The recording with Miles Davis exhibits impressive solos and a solid rhythm. Another rendition by Wes Montgomery adds a breakneck speed flair. Be sure to like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell!
