Marche commémorative "Sur les pas de Delgrès".

This Sunday, May 17th, the town of Saint-Claude organized a commemorative walk entitled "In the Footsteps of Delgrès," in homage to the events of May 1802. It was a moment filled with emotion, reflection, and remembrance, keeping alive the memory of those who said no to the re-establishment of slavery in Guadeloupe. Two starting points were offered. The first, intended for experienced hikers, departed at 3:00 a.m. from Fort Delgrès. The second, open to all, began at the Gourbeyre Tourist Office. Throughout the walk, participants, dressed in white and red, walked in a spirit of remembrance and solidarity. Their destination was the Anglemont site in Matouba, an emblematic location in Guadeloupean history. It was there, in that profound silence, that the marchers gathered to pay homage to Louis Delgrès, a heroic figure in the fight against oppression and a defender of liberty in 1802. As every year, the Voukoum cultural movement participated in this march, reaffirming its commitment to the duty of remembrance and the transmission of history to younger generations. Led by Patrice Segrétier and Abel Rénia, the marchers were accompanied by historian Gérard Lafleur. Throughout the march, he passionately and meticulously recounted the epic story of these men who chose struggle and sacrifice over submission. For the mayor of Saint-Claude, Fabrice Minatchy, this event is of paramount importance: “We must keep this march alive for future generations. Our history must be passed on, understood, and honored.” Elected officials and administrative staff were also present from 2:00 a.m., alongside historian Gérard Lafleur, to support this memorial initiative. A strong collective mobilization, centered on memory, knowledge, and freedom.
