7000 B.C.: Apparatus of Capture | Deleuze and Guattari's "A Thousand Plateaus" | Plateau 13
In this lecture, we'll be getting into Apparatus of Capture, the 13th plateau of "A Thousand Plateaus" which continues off where the Treatise on Nomadology left off, this time examining the ways in which the State and capitalism develop and capture the forces that ward it off. We'll examine some of the most pernicious features of capitalism, such as the way it thrives by pushing as close as possible to the "threshold" of every assemblage in an effort to extract surplus value/gain profit, as well as the way in which D&G challenge the traditional assumption that land, work, and money (three common features of modern states) simply gradually evolved from more "primitive" forms. Instead, D&G will argue that these ideas, as they function in the State, can only have occurred by an instantaneous onset of "magical capture" which creates the "before" of these concepts which is levied as the reason for their existence.
