Victoria (later Kennedy) Quay, Cork, 1902 - Restored and in colour

One of the 1902 Mitchell and Kenyon films filmed around the time of the Cork international exhibition, this film shows the busy Cork docklands lined with steamships. Much has changed in this area in recent years, but there are also many familiar sights. In the distance, you can just about spot Shandon, along with what looks like the chimney of Thompsons bakery on McCurtain Street. These are followed by Horgan's Quay and a beautiful vista of Montenotte. The man in the hat that the camera seems to be following is part of the production. His role was to invite people to appear on camera, the goal being to then entice them to local screenings of the films shot in the city. His pickings are slim in this case, but we'll see a cameo from him again in some of the other films. What other landmarks can you spot? Let us know in the comments ..
